- In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
- Shape the mixture into 4 to 6 oval patties about an inch thick.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the patties for 3–4 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and add butter. Sauté the sliced mushrooms and remaining chopped onion for 6–8 minutes.
- Pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stir, and bring to a gentle simmer.
- Mix cornstarch with water until smooth and add to the gravy; stir until it thickens.
- Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and let simmer for 10–12 minutes.
- Sprinkle fresh thyme or chopped parsley on top before serving.
