Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 1 lb ground beef a flavorful base; you can substitute with ground turkey for a leaner option.
  • 1 small onion, diced adds sweetness; try shallots for a milder flavor.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced brings aromatic goodness; garlic powder can be used in a pinch.
  • 1 cup tomato sauce provides moisture and depth; use crushed tomatoes for a chunkier texture.
  • 1/3 cup ketchup adds tang and sweetness; barbecue sauce works well too for a smoky flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce enhances umami; soy sauce is a good substitute if needed.
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard balances out the flavors; Dijon mustard adds a nice kick.
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar rounds off the acidity of tomatoes; honey can be a natural alternative.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt essential for flavor; adjust based on your choice of beef or substitutes.
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper adds a touch of spice; feel free to increase for more heat.
For the Biscuit Shells
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough (8 biscuits) forms the perfect, buttery shell for your filling; homemade dough can be used for an extra touch.
For Garnish
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley optional; adds a pop of color and freshness; chives make a great alternative.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • 12-cup muffin tin

Method

How to Make Sloppy Joe Biscuits
  1. Preheat your oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 12-cup muffin tin to prevent sticking.
  2. Brown the beef: In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Stir occasionally, cooking for about 5–7 minutes until browned, draining any excess fat.
  3. Sauté the aromatics: Add diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the onion is translucent and garlic is fragrant.
  4. Mix in the sauces: Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and brown sugar. Let simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Prepare the biscuit shells: Flatten each biscuit slightly and place into the greased muffin cups, pressing down gently.
  6. Fill the cups: Spoon the meat mixture into each biscuit shell, filling them up to the top.
  7. Bake to perfection: Place in the oven and bake for 12–15 minutes until biscuits are golden and puffed.
  8. Cool and garnish: Allow to cool for about 5 minutes in the tin. Sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired and serve warm.
